The Process
At Sam and Sara we use unorthodox metal and wood materials and traditional handcraft production skills to create unique timeless home and lifestyle accessories. Our techniques involve manipulating cold stainless steel to produce soft fluid shapes, working with soft brass to create hard casted objects and utilising light aluminium to produce versatile contemporary designs.
Sand Casting and Wax Moulding
A sand cast is formed with the help of a model or pattern pressed into a sand mixture . Molten liquid metal is poured into the mould cavity and once the metal has cooled off, the sand cast is broken away. Wax moulding is a 6,000 year old process in which a liquid material is poured into a hand made wax mould, solidified and then ejected for hand decoration.
Our artisans use these ancient techniques to produce our products of unparalleled quality.
Hand Etching
Etching dates back to the 1900s to pioneers of hand etching such as Rembrandt and Whistler. At Sam and Sara our artisans rekindle this great art by hand etching all our products with innovative, original designs onto stainless steel, brass etc to make beautiful Lanterns, candle holders and decoratives.
Using Nickel
Skilled Indian silversmiths produce our high-quality metal collection using nickel plating as an alternative to silver plating which is soft and easily tarnished. Our stainless steel nickel plated products such as Lanterns & wine accessories are durable and able to withstand harsh weathers and frequent polishing.
Hand Hammering
Our metal items are hammered over a wooden dye which softens the metal and leaves a unique mark of individuality. The surfaces are then hand polished and smoothed ready for a nickel bath. We have successfully applied this skill on vases, mirrors & champagne baths.
Soldering
To achieve the glittering perfection of our vases and planters, skilled soldering is performed using two bodies of stainless steel metal. The edge is then flanged and the vase repeatedly smoothed and polished by hand. The visibly soldered seams are evidence of genuine hand made articles.
